If there is one person who epitomizes surfing it would have to be MP, thought to be standoffish and shunned the limelight, it was only after his win in the first Stubbies and eventual retirement fro surfing that people found out the truth. MP suffered mental illness and at the time there was stigma and misinformation regarding any mental condition. I have said it a few times on this site, that I have met a lot of surfers suffering mental illness and they will all tell you, that once you hit the water all the worlds worries are left behind. RIP Michael.
